Allergy-Friendly Starbucks

Happy Thursday readers! I realized that I haven’t eaten out recently, but I knew I wanted to write about eating out this week (which is counter-intuitive, I know!). But then I realized that I do eat out, daily actually. Every morning, I walk to the Starbucks on the Bryant campus to grab a coffee at the start of my work day. So I thought, why not write about my typical Starbucks order?!

Whether you have food allergies, food sensitivities, or none of the above, ordering from coffee chains like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts can sometimes be a struggle because everyone online is posting about what’s “good” and “bad” for you to order. I like to simplify it to order what you like, because it’s your choice, but that’s just me. It definitely becomes harder to order what you like when you have a food allergies or sensitivities, or you’re like me and you have the limitations of food sensitivities PLUS the added bonus of monitoring your sugar intake to stick to your meal plan.

I honestly used to go back and forth about what to order at Starbucks, my now coffee chain of choice, because what I wanted wasn’t always available in a dairy free option (before I started monitoring my sugar intake). I looooooove caramel macchiatos, and I used to think that they were just milk (which I subbed with soy or almond milk), espresso, and caramel syrup (sugar). It wasn’t until a barista asked me specifically one day if I wanted my macchiato dairy free, to which I responded yes, when I was told that the caramel syrup had milk product in it. I am so grateful to her, because I wouldn’t have known otherwise! (And yes, I understand I could have googled it, but sometimes the internet is not a reliant source for restaurant/coffee chains. Believe me, I’ve tried and failed many times!) I have also tried the specialty latte drinks that come out every season, but found out later that Starbucks uses the same caramel as the topping to the latte that’s in the macchiato, and that the chocolate sauce also has dairy residue, which makes those out as well.

For a while, I just drank black iced coffee with 2 packets of Splenda (which I  no longer use in my coffee after watching the Netflix documentary The Magic Pill, which I HIGHLY recommend), but it was too boring for me, and at the time, I didn’t realize that the Splenda was giving me a stomachache/increasing my glucose levels. So I started experimenting with Starbucks K-cups at home to get a sense of what I like and what was right for my body, and that’s how I cam up with my current drink order: grande iced (or hot) latte with coconut milk.

According to my meal plan, 8oz of coconut or almond milk is equal to a tablespoon of eating almond butter. The latte is naturally sweetened by the coconut milk, and I prefer the taste of espresso to coffee, so the latte works best for me. I don’t often finish the whole latte, mostly because I also drink preworkout in the morning and don’t want to overdue it on the caffeine, and it’s a great pick-me-up in the morning. Plus, I LOVE pairing it with my daily breakfast, and literal fast breaker, oatmeal w/ blueberries and a protein shake, AND it doesn’t give me a stomachache. #winning !

So there you have it! This is what I order whenever I go to Starbucks, and I really look forward to the order every time. Here’s to living our best and most delicious lives this Thursday. ❤
